PhD in Health and Housing at Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry

The European Centre for Environment in Human Health (part of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry) is partnering with the University of Exeter, School of Biology to offer PhD in the area of epidemiology and the built environment to start in October 2011, based in Truro, Cornwall. The studentship will provide an annual stipend of £17,290 for three year, with the student responsible for paying their own fees. This studentship is part-funded by the ESF-Convergence programme 2007-2013. Agreement No: 11200NCO5.
New building practices including the switch from solid to liquid fuels, more insulation, greater sealing, use of fire doors etc has led to potentially less ventilation and increases in exposure of residents to indoor chemicals including moulds and pollen spores. Exposure to these may lead to increased risk of diseases including allergies and eczema.
This study aims to measure the severity of the problem in Cornwall and its impact on the health of the Cornish population as well as examine if public health messages can be used to reduce the impact. By collection of population health data specific groups within the population most at risk of exposure and negative health outcomes, who would most benefit from targeted health messages, can be identified.
Criteria
You should have an appropriate first degree of class 2:1 or above. A good Master`s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology or a closely related discipline would also be an advantage.
The successful applicant will normally be an EU national and have a home address in Cornwall for the duration of their studies.
If English is not your first language, a language test certificate is required with the following minimum requirements for this studentship: IELTS 7.0. Personal qualities should also include the ability to work independently and high degree of motivation necessary to complete a PhD in three years.
Start date: 1st October 2011

We also offer University degree programs in Engineering Physics, Vehicle Engineering, `Engineering and Education`, and `Open Entrance`, as well as a number of International Masters Programs.
The Division of Nuclear Power Safety (NPS) performs research which encompasses nuclear reactor safety design, nuclear power plant system analysis, development of methods and models for deterministic and probabilistic safety analysis, experimental studies of nuclear power safety and multi-scale modeling of the relevant physical processes and phenomena. Important element of the research activity is the synergy between numerical and experimental studies of multi-phase flows, heat and mass transfer at different scales, ranging from the plant-scale system thermal-hydraulics, to component-scale multi-dimensional fluid dynamics, and down to phenomena-scale and direct numerical simulations. While advanced methods and tools exist for system and phenomenological analysis at individual scales, understanding of intricate processes and non-linear system behavior (as such may occur in complex engineering systems during abnormal transients and accidents) require a new analysis platform, which cuts across the multiple scales and couple multiple physics phenomena.

Scholarship from University of Twente

The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The University has approximately 2700 employees and 8000 MSc and BSc students and is the Netherlands` only campus university.

The Civil Engineering group of the Faculty of Military Sciences is part the Netherlands Defence Academy (NDLA). In co-operation with the Construction Management & Engineering group of the University of Twente and under supervision of Prof.dr.ir. A.E.C. van der Stoel, cutting-edge research is conducted in the area of construction process management and technology.

The Netherlands Defense Academy and the University of Twente are looking for a:

PhD for a PhD research project

Expeditionary Construction Management: A research on construction management processes in stabilization and reconstruction operations.

Scope of the Ph.D. project:
In several (post-) conflict situations, military involvement in (re)construction of local roads, schools and hospitals is necessary to create stability. The scarcity of military engineers and the necessity to be involved in such non-military activities – as a part of a wider comprehensive conflict approach – forces the military organization to outsource these activities. Outsourcing construction projects to – in particular – local contractors increases local capacity-building and local ownership. Despite these advantages, the military organization also faces many difficulties regarding tendering, controlling, monitoring and evaluating construction projects which are performed by local parties. In order to overcome these difficulties, the objective of this research project is to develop a new construction management process model which suits the specific needs of construction management in stabilization and reconstruction operations. The PhD will spend about 20% of his time on teaching courses to NDLA-students.

Profile:
The candidate is expected to have a Master degree in construction management, civil engineering, business administration, economics or a comparable subject. Excellent analytical skills are a must. Furthermore, the candidate should be able to work in a multidisciplinary and dynamic work environment and be able to read and understand Dutch and to write and speak English.

Offer:
We offer the possibility to work on an interesting Ph.D. project for 4 years. The salary scale, starts at of € 2042,- gross per month for the first year, and will lead up to € 2612,- in the fourth year based upon the job profile for PhD researcher (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). In addition, the University of Twente offers attractive fringe benefits.

Location:
The PhD will be located at Faculty of Military Sciences of the Netherlands Defense Academy (NDLA) in Breda. Because of the military context of this project, screening will be part of the procedure.

Information:
For more information, please contact dr. H. Voordijk (j.t.voordijk[at]utwente.nl) or dr. ir. E. Dado (E.Dado[at]nlda.nl).

For more information, please contact dr. H. Voordijk (j.t.voordijk[at]utwente.nl) or dr. ir. E. Dado (E.Dado[at]nlda.nl).
